Why beer is considered as a healthy drink?

There are plenty of studies and researches that reveal the positive aspects of alcohol and it is red wine that often being highlighted. But in recent times, beer is also being mentioned as another beverage with health benefits. Here are few citations from research papers that support the health benefits of beer, when consumed moderately.
In general it appears that moderate consumption of alcohol is in fact good for the cardiovascular system. Consumption of Alcohol is found to be related with raised levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Fibrinogen is a protein believed to be a cause of strokes and thromboses, and it was discovered that many drinkers have less Fibrinogen. Alcohol can also decrease insulin levels, which in turn reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition in which the arteries harden.
There are few researches, that propose beer may decrease the danger of coronary disease. The research done by the Institute of Epidemiology at the University of Münster in Germany is one of them. But some other studies show that the advantages of beer actually far more than those believed to be from the alcohol it includes.
TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute in the Netherlands has also conducted a research on this subject and it disclosed the levels of vitamin B6 found in beer drinkers went up by thirty percent, but it went up by fifteen percent in those who frequently drink gin and red wine.
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition has published some research finding in its July 2001 issue, and it suggested that some of the helpful effects of beer could be caused by folate, the anion form of vitamin B9. Folates is famed for fighting against cardiovascular disease.
Another important finding was revealed by the study conducted at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As published in a 2001 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine it suggested that beer consumed in moderation helps in the protection of mental capacities in older women.
From the study conducted by Tufts University in Massachusetts, it was discovered that by drinking beer you can help to conserve the mineral density of your bones. The leg bones among elderly people are likely to weaken.
Apart from all these benefits there can be certain risks linked with beer consumption. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is one such risk that forbids women from consuming alcohol. If a mother consumes alcohol that passes through the umbilical cord and through the breast milk to the baby and they can cause brain disorders in the baby.
Weight gain is another worry for beer drinkers. Beer does not contain fat, but depending on the type of brew one glass may contain 150 up to 450 calories, although this volume is lower than the calories you get in apple juice or red wine.
The well-known risks of overly consumption of beer are liver damage and strain on the kidneys. The amount of beer you consume is the major deciding factor in whether beer is a healthy drink or an unhealthy drink.
However most studies and research reports suggest, if you take no more than two 12-ounce glasses a day, beer will almost always be a big advantage rather than a threat to one's health.
